IUBAT ACADEMIC RETREAT
Many Bangladesh universities - both government and non-government - do not concern themselves with the need for constant improvement in quality of teaching. IUBAT's faculty development program addresses this issue on a regular basis.
Professor Richards raised four aspects of quality: evaluation of student performance, student evaluation of faculty, peer evaluation of faculty, and adequacy of facilities and resources. Professor Berland's presentation asked faculty to consider quality from the perspective of the employer and the student as well as the educator.
The student and the employer are the ultimate "customer" for post-secondary institutio
International University of Business Agriculture and Technology (IUBAT) visiting faculty members John Richards and Alex Berland, both from Canada, gave the keynote addresses to the 17th Academic Retreat, conducted in BARD, Comilla on the 2nd February 2008. The theme of the day long Retreat was "Quality Service Delivery".
ns. IUBAT is fortunate to have excellent relations with leading employers, locally in Bangladesh and internationally. These employers seek 'job-ready' graduates. In addition they need employees with team-work and problem-solving skills, an attitude of life-long learning and a strong sense of professional accountability.
Good universities seek to measure student performance accurately. Frequent feedback informs students about their performance, and gives faculty information about student difficulties.
Not only is faculty evaluation of students important, so is the evaluation of faculty by students. Universities should provide a mechanism whereby students can comment on the teaching quality of their professors.
Good universities also require adequate physical facilities. IUBAT is fortunate to have its own campus, a modern building, in a desirable location.
The fourth aspect of quality is peer evaluation by faculty of themselves. One means to reward high quality teaching and research is use of merit pay to reward outstanding teachers.
The retreat concluded with remarks by Dr. M. Alimullah Miyan, Vice-Chancellor of IUBAT who urged upon the faculty to ensure quality service delivery to all stakeholders of the university viz students, employers, government, academia and society at large. The faculty expressed the vow to uphold quality in every aspect of the academic life in the university to realize the human resources development mission of the university.
