INDIAN DELEGATION AT IUBAT |
Dr M A Mabud, Director of Management Development Center (MDC),
Kolkata, India called upon Prof Dr M Alimullah Miyan,
Vice-Chancellor and Founder of International University of
Business Agriculture and Technology (IUBAT) at his office on 6
October 2003 to discuss the potential of academic cooperation
between the institutions covering different aspects.
MDC, headed by Dr Mabub, who had held senior positions in
industry and professional institutions in India briefed Dr
Miyan about the present in-house training programs offered by
MDC for all categories of personnel of various organizations
in India both in the public and private sectors. Dr Mabud said
that the focus of their programs is geared towards developing
attitude and promoting skills. As a result, each program is
designed individually to cater to the need of those for whom
it is meant.
Prof Miyan informed the visitor about the steady development
of the university in physical and academic terms covering
business administration, computer sciences, engineering, and
tourism and hospitality management. His recent visit to India
for institutionalizing the Tourism and Hospitality program of
IUBAT was appreciated by Dr Mabud. The information on
innovative arrangement in educational financing in the form of
student loan through the IUBAT Multipurpose Co-operative
Society Limited (IMCSL) and promoting the concept of community
self-reliance through Knowledge Based Area Development was
highly commended by the visitor.
Dr Miyan briefed the visitor about the Centre for Management
Development (CMD) of IUBAT which organizes managerial and
professional manpower development programs along with applied
research and consultancy activities since 1991. The center is
committed to management development of the business and other
organizations of Bangladesh and offering career-oriented
educational programs, executive development courses at senior,
mid and supervisory levels, functional courses, activity
related and methodology courses as well as dissemination of
management knowledge, so that these can contribute to the
industrial, social, economic, and academic development of the
country.
Following the discussion, they agreed to establish a
cooperative relationship between CMD and MDC. Dr Miyan also
briefed the visitor about the on-going accreditation and
membership of IUBAT with many professional bodies.
Discussion in the other areas like exchange of faculty,
student referral to different programs at IUBAT, and faculty
recruitment in the management, computer science, engineering,
and tourism and hospitality areas were also held.
Prof Miyan requested Dr Mabub to have the concurrence of Mrs
Mabub, who is the Ex-Principal of Institute of Hotel
Management, Catering and Applied Nutrition (IHMCAN), to be an
academic advisor to the College of Tourism and Hospitality
Managemnt (CTHM) of IUBAT.
The meeting was conducted in a fruitful and friendly
atmosphere in the backdrop of on-going co-operation of IUBAT
with other Indian institutions. They exchanged informative
materials on two institutions to form the foundation for
collaborating efforts in future. Dr Miyan also presented two
research monographs on "Natural Gas Options" and "Electricity
for All" to the visitor who appreciated the public service
orientation of the university.
The meeting was also participated by Mr Mitul Mahmud Khan,
Coordinator of College of Tourism and Hospitality Management
program of IUBAT.

MANIPAL TEAM VISITS
IUBAT |
Prof Dr M Alimullah Miyan, Vice-Chancellor
and Founder of IUBAT – International University of Business
Agriculture and Technology met with Mr. Siddharth Gorawara,
Manager of International-Operations of Manipal Academy for
Higher Education at his office on 28 September 2003 to discuss
the potential of academic cooperation between the
organizations covering different aspects.
Manipal is the nucleus of 53 educational institutions which
have an enrollment of 30,000 students. There are two
universities, 27 professional colleges, including five medical
and two dental colleges and college of nursing, allied health,
communication, information services, management, hotel
management, engineering, pharmacy, education and law. The late
Dr TMA Pai, physician, educationist, banker and
philanthropist, was the founder and builder of Manipal.
Prof Miyan informed the visitor about the steady development
of the university in physical and academic terms covering
business administration, computer sciences, engineering, and
tourism and hospitality management. The effort to initiate
nursing program was appreciated by Mr Gorawara. The
information on innovative arrangement in educational financing

through exchange of faculty student transfer, joint venture in
building hotel and hospital, consultancy consortium in IT,
Management, and Health fields, training programs, social work,
collaboration in international projects, data processing,
programming, and support-services and others was discussed and
agreement was reached to explore the same at the appropriate
level. The meeting was conducted in a fruitful and friendly
atmosphere in the backdrop of on-going co-operation of IUBAT
with other Indian institutions. They exchange informative
materials on two institutions to form the foundation for
collaborating efforts in future. Dr Miyan also presented two
research monographs on “Natural Gas Options” and “Electricity
for All” to the visitor who appreciated the public service
orientation of the university.
The important aspects of their discussion revolved around the
challenge of developing post-secondary comprehensive
educational institutions to reflect social needs rather then
demand only.
Mr Gorawara extended an invitation to Dr Miyan to visit
Manipal in the near future to invigorate the co-operative
relationship. This visit of Mr Gorawara is the initiation of
academic collaboration between IUBAT and Manipal.
The meeting was also participated by Mr Mitul Mahmud Khan,
Coordinator of College of Business Administration of IUBAT.

FULBRIGHT SCHOLAR AT
IUBAT |
Dr. Mahabub ul Alam, Faculty of the Department of Biological
and Agriculture Engineering, Kansas State University (KSU),
USA, has joined as a visiting faculty in International
University of Business Agriculture and Technology (IUBAT) for
Fall-03 as a Senior Fulbright Scholar. His joining will
invigorate the collaborating activities between the KSU and
IUBAT.
Dr. Alam has a Ph D. in Irrigation Engineering and Soil
Physics from Colorado State University (CSU), Ft. Collins,
Colorado, USA, M.S. in Irrigation and B.S. in Agricultural
Engineering from American University of Beirut, Lebanon with
distinction. He worked as an Irrigation specialist, at
Colorado River Salinity Control Project with CSU and as a
Research Associate, at CSU-USDA-ARS, Colorado. He has working
experiences in Bangladesh as well. He worked as an
Agricultural Engineer for Bangladesh Agricultural Research
Council (BARC) and Bangladesh Water Development Board. He was
the chief Extention officer of the Ganges Kobadak Irrigation
Project in Kushtia, Bangladesh.
He has served in many professional societies. At present he is
the Chair of Kansas Section of American Society of
Agricultural Engineers. He is also member of many other
International Associations.
Dr. Alam has achieved many awards like Outstanding Service
Award, BARC-2003, Water Management Team Award and Outstanding
Leadership Award, CSU, Blue Ribbon Award, ASAE and President
Faculty Development Award from Kansas State University (KSU).
Dr. Alam will teach a course at IUBAT on Irrigation Technology
this fall. He will also share his experiencs and ideas to
develop agricultural research amongst the IUBAT community as a
resource person. He will also share time with Bangladesh
Agricultural Research Counsil (BARC).

NAID'S ADVISOR VISITED
IUBAT |
Dr. Abdul Latif Dewan, Advisor of Nahin Association for
Integrated Development (NAID), Cardiff, UK called on Prof. Dr.
M Alimullah Miyan, Vice-Chancellor and Founder of
International University of Business Agriculture And
Technology (IUBAT) at his Office on Monday, September 08,
2003. This visit was a part of the continuing collaboration
between IUBAT and NAID.
A formal meeting was held at the IUBAT city campus with Prof.
Dr. M Alimullah Miyan. Dr. Miyan briefed the visitor about the
steady development of IUBAT and BSAg-Bachelor of Science in
Agriculture program. Dr. Latif showed keen interest in the
development of the university and expressed the resolve of
NAID to work together for human resources development and
employment generated issues. He also showed interest to
continue organising seminar, training, and workshop with IUBAT
in his field of expertise
Dr. Abdul Latif Dewan is the Founder of Bangladesh Institute
of Apiculture. Dr. Latif has obtained Ph D. on bee keeping.
The meeting conducted in a fruitful and friendly atmosphere.

BRITISH SCHOLAR AT IUBAT |
Dr. Hasanat M. Hussain of Dept. of Education and Skill, UK.
Called on Prof. Dr. M Alimullah Miyan, Vice-Chancellor and
Founder of International University of Business Agriculture
and Technology (IUBAT) at his office on Sunday, August 24,
2003.
Dr. Hasanat has been recently appointed by the Queen a Member
of the Order of British Empire (MBE) for his outstanding
contribution to education and for services to community
relations. IUBAT Community members felicitated Dr Hasanat for
his outstanding achievement and recognition.
Dr. Miyan and Dr. Hasanat held extensive discussions on the
realization of the goals of developing higher education in
Bangladesh in general and the opportunities in Tourism and
Hospitality Management field in particular. Dr Hasanat
attended a press-cum-community Dialogue in London on June 10,
2001, organized by IUBAT and NAID partner organization in the
UK. This is a follow to that meeting. Prof Miyan briefed the
distinguished visitor about the academic and intra-structural
progress of IUBAT. He also informed him about the progress of
Bachelor of Arts in Tourism and Hospitality Management (BATHM)
Program which is geared to meeting manpower needs of catering
industry in the UK. Dr Hasanat shown keen interest in this
respect as he had been working as an honorary advisor to the
Bangladesh Caterers Association in the UK over the past
decade.
A tripriate meeting also took place involving Dr Hasanat, Prof
Miyan and Dr John Richards, visiting Professor to IUBAT from
Simon Freser University, Canada on the issues of quality in
higher education in Bangladesh Discussions revolved around
policy process, management and accreditation issues of
institutions of higher baring. The parties agreed to continue
deliberations in this respect to develop the education sector
through incorporation of experiences of different countries of
the Commonwealth.
Dr Hasanat also observed the on-going defense of practicum
reports of the graduating interests and expressed satisfaction
at the quality and grooming of the graduates.
On invitation from Prof Miyan Dr Hasanat kindly agreed to join
the IUBAT International Advisory Council and act an Advisor to
the College of Tourism and Hospitality Management of IUBAT.
This on principle agreement to strengthen the educational
programs at IUBAT will be duly formalized in the coming weeks.
The visit ended with exchange of publications of IUBAT and the
common desire to cooperate in development of education and
skill of youth of Bangladesh to fight the menace of poverty.

DUTCH VISITING PROFESSORS AT IUBAT |
International University of Business Agriculture and
Technology (IUBAT) organized a reception in honor of Visiting
Professors to IUBAT from the Netherlands Drs. Gerard A M Van
Den Heuvel, Emeritus Dean of Journalism of Fontys Professional
University and Dr. Laetitia Van Den Heuvel-Weijermans,
Professor, Department of Language and Literature, Tilburg
University in the city campus on January 21, 2003. IUBAT
Founder and Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. M Alimullah Miyan
presided over the ceremony.
Drs. Gerard A M Van Den Heuvel delivered a short speech on the
Journalism education and training in Bangladesh and expressed
his views that journalism profession is governed by its own
rules and codes and that has to be developed through training.
He recalled his visit of 1996 and the progress made during
this period in academic and physical development of IUBAT. He
expressed satisfaction at the steps initiated in developing a
Journalism education program at IUBAT.
Dr. Laetitia Ven Den Heuvel-Weijermans spoke on effective use
of modern methods of teaching, benefits of new technologies
and means of involvement of academician in using modern tools
in teaching. She appreciated the efforts of the Department of
Languages in improving English language skills and assured
full cooperation in this respect.
Prof. K R Kamal Wadood, Chair, Department of Language of IUBAT
and Mr. Anuj Kumar Biswas, a student of MBA program of IUBAT
thanked them on behalf of IUBAT community for their
contributions to IUBAT.
During the presidential speech Prof. Dr. M Alimullah Miyan
high lighted the role of IUBAT as a lead centre for initiating
a quality journalism program in the country with active
overseas support and thanked both the Dutch visiting
Professors for their co-operation and support in this respect.
The visiting professors were adored with flowers and given
token presentation on behalf of IUBAT and IUBAT Alumni
Association.
The well-attended reception ceremony was rounded off with
refreshment at the IUBAT Panoramic cafeteria. Marcus Talang a
student of BBA program was the master of ceremony.

Mr Anwar Ali, Executive Director of Nahin
Association for Integrated Development (NAID), Cardiff, UK and
Visiting Fellow of IUBAT paid a month long visit to
International University of Business Agriculture and
Technology (IUBAT) between September 5 – October 5, 2002. The
visit is part of continuing collaboration between IUBAT and
NAID for consolidating the degree program in hospitality
management at IUBAT to cater to the skilled manpower needs of
hotel and catering industry in the UK.
The most remarkable aspect of his visit was the courtesy call
on the honorable President of Bangladesh, who is also the
Chancellor of IUBAT. A 5 members delegation of IUBAT called on
the Chancellor of IUBAT and President of Bangladesh Prof Dr
Iajuddin Ahmed on October 1st. The honorable Chancellor
welcomed the delegation and exchanged views with Mr Anwar Ali
about the prospect of employment of qualified Bangladeshis in
the catering industry of UK. Mr Ali informed that the newly
started hospitality management program at IUBAT has the
potential of opening up employment opportunities in
Bangladeshi owned Indian restaurants in the UK. Honorable
President and Chancellor showed keen interest in NAID-IUBAT
cooperation for skill development with overseas & local
markets in perspective.
Mr Ali carried out extensive consultation with the students of
Bachelor of Tourism and Hospitality Management (BATHM)
program, including a structured discussion session with all
students for 2 hours on October 1st. He was one of the guests
in the reception organized by the College of Tourism and
Hospitality Management to honor the visiting delegation of
British Bangladesh Chef Association (BBBC), UK on September
9th at the IUBAT city campus. He was the keynote speaker in
the Career Development Counseling on Hospitality Management
organized by IUBAT Sylhet Office at Ballagonj and Tajpur
Colleges, Sylhet on September 21st and the auditorium of
Janakallyan Bhaban, at Uposhahar, Sylhet city corporation on
September 22nd. These have generated considerable interest in
hospitality management. As a Visiting Fellow, Mr Ali
contributed to the process of consolidation of BATHM program
at IUBAT. Mr Ali also paid visit to the permanent campus of
IUBAT at Uttara.
Formal meeting was held at the IUBAT city campus with the
IUBAT Founder & Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr M Alimullah Miyan. The
developments around the BATHM program including provision for
paid practical and placement in the UK, progress of IUBAT
Sylhet office and promotional aspects came up for discussion.
NAID representative informed thtat the UK offers a special
employment opportunity for BATHM graduates because of shortage
of skilled manpower in the many Indian restaurants there owned
by Bangladeshis, primarily from Sylhet. There is a legal
provision for professionals in hospitality management with
BATHM like degree to engage in restaurant industry with work
permits. Besides, the Bangladeshi owned restaurants also
provide opportunity of paid practicum work in the UK during
the study period. It was agreed to continue cooperation to
harness this development opportunity for Bangladeshis.

Prof Amin U Sarkar, Chairman, Georgia
College and State University, USA, called on Prof Dr M
Alimullah Miyan, Founder & Vice-Chancellor of International
University of Business Agriculture and Technology (IUBAT) at
his office on June 13, 2002.
The important aspects of their discussion were to explore
the potential of academic and research collaboration in
terms of credit transfer, exchange of student and faculty
and joint research between GCSU and IUBAT. Besides business,
other areas identified for co-operation includes arts and
sciences, nursing and English language. Availability of
scholarships for IUBAT faculty development through
post-graduate studies was also discussed. Prof Sarkar
expressed interest in exploring collaborative activities
between GCSU and IUBAT through drawing-up Memorandum of
Understanding for universitywide co-operation and
Articulation Agreements on business and economics programs.
Prof Sarkar also indicated interest in developing
cooperative relationship in the areas of health sciences
between GCSU and IUBAT.
During the discussion, Prof Miyan focussed on the history of
IUBAT and its present development with persistent efforts.
He also expressed interest on mutual collaboration and
pointed to the benefits through such process.
Prof Sarkar appreciated the contribution of Center for
Policy Research (CPR), IUBAT in addressing social issues on
economic, social, and business development through the
active support and involvement of many developing partners.
The first commentry of CPR on Natural Gas Options for
Bangladesh was highly commended by the visitor.
The meeting was conducted in a fruitful and friendly
atmosphere. Prof Sarkar and Prof Miyan expressed their
satisfaction and agreed to move towards finalizing
co-operative agreement between GCSU and IUBAT. The meeting

DUTCH VISITORS AT IUBAT |
IUBAT—International University of Business Agriculture and
Technology organized a reception in honor of the Visiting
Research Associates from Arnhem Business University, The
Netherlands, namely Marlon de Ricjk and Simone Germans in
the city campus on May 21, 2002. IUBAT Founder &
Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr M Alimullah Miyan presided over the
ceremony.
The Dutch research fellows delivered short speeches on the
experiences gathered during the last four months of research
work at IUBAT and expressed their satisfactions in the
support they received from all concerned. They were also
happy to learn more about Bangladesh and its culture through
their 5 month long attachment. They thanked the IUBAT
authority for giving them a cordial reception.
During the speech, Prof Dr M Alimullah Miyan thanked the
Dutch research associates for carrying out the research work
at the university. He recalled the history of collaboration
with Arnhem Business University, through the Bangla Link
program, which is a network of six Dutch universities to
support IUBAT. Prof Miyan particularly mentioned that this
exchange of scholars is an on going collaborative rapport
with Arnhem Business University which reinforce
internationalization, cultural diversity in the campus, and
better human understanding of academics.
Prof Miyan also informed that the cooperation is likely to
expand through exploration of another new vista of ASIA LINK
PROGRAM of EU.
Mr Mitul Mahmud Khan, Faculty of College of Business
Administration (CBA) of IUBAT in his welcome speech stressed
the need for strengthening the ongoing collaborative rapport
with Arnhem Business University for mutual benefit in
institutional development and academic programs and
appreciated the commendable job by the visiting scholars.
Mr Khan acknowledged the similar contribution by 4 interns
from the Arnhem Business School at the College of Business
Administration of IUBAT in 1999 and solicit ongoing
cooperation in the future.
Among others Fatema Banu, Kazi Enamul Kabir, and Fahmid Ul
Islam, students of Business and Computer Science programs of
IUBAT spoke on the occasion.
Visiting scholars were adored with flowers and token
presentations by the IUBAT students. The function was
rounded-off with refreshments at the panoramic cafeteria of
IUBAT. Mahjabeen Rahman of BCS program was the Master of the
Ceremony.

Mr Ana Miah of Nahin Association for
Integrated Development (NAID), Cardiff, UK paid a two day
visit to International University of Business Agriculture
and Technology (IUBAT) on February 25-26, 2002. The visit is
part of continuing collaboration between IUBAT and NAID for
establishing a degree program in hospitality management at
IUBAT to cater to the skilled manpower needs of hotel and
catering industry in the UK. A reception was hosted in honor
of the delegate on the evening of 25th. On the 26th morning,
the delegate visited the permanent campus of IUBAT at Uttara
and expressed keen interest in the development of the new
campus.
Formal meeting was held at the IUBAT city campus with the
IUBAT Founder & Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr M Alimullah Miyan.
The developments around the BATHM program including

Mr Don McDonald of International Programs and Mr Greg
Pazmandy of Faculty of Business of University of Technology,
Sydney (UTS), Australia called on Prof Dr M Alimullah Miyan,
Founder & Vice-Chancellor of IUBAT—International University
of Business Agriculture and Technology at his office on
February 18th.
The important aspects of their discussion were to explore
the potential of academic and research collaboration in
terms of credit transfer, exchange of student and faculty
and joint research between UTS and IUBAT. Besides Nursing,
other areas identified for co-operation includes IT,
business, engineering and English language. Mr McDonald
expressed interest in exploring collaborative activities.
