Seminar on housing for all |
|
A seminar on “Housing for All – Technologies for
Low-Income Housing Development” was held at International
University of Business Agriculture and Technology (IUBAT) on
March 04, 2004. Dr Robert Hodgson, Prof, School of Engineering
and Computer Science of University of Exeter, UK and Visiting
Professor to College of Engineering and Technology (CEAT) of
IUBAT, led the seminar. Dr Robert Hodgson made an orderly
presentation on the effectiveness of constructing houses using
indigenous resources to develop a low-cost housing, which can
also protect the village community from hazards.
While reflecting on research, recently conducted in Dinajpur and
Gopalganj, Dr Hodgson indicated that 85% of Bangladesh’s
population lives in non-engineered homes built of natural
materials such as local mud and timber or bamboo. These
structures are often damaged or destroyed by flooding or strong
winds. He urged to improve technologies and identify appropriate
methods and communicating the same in a low-literacy
environment. The paper presented by Dr Hodgson illustrates the
economic context in which appropriate improvements can be made
and the processes currently underway that will introduce
cement-stabilized mud to mitigate flood damage to rural homes in
Bangladesh. He invited private and commercial sectors to
disseminate the relative advantages of improved natural
materials and “modern” materials such as concrete.
A lively discussion followed the presentation of Dr Hodgson. Two
visiting Fellow Mr. M. Hodgson and Miss. Lesley Seymour also
share their views and opinions with participants. IUBAT Pro-VC
Prof. Mahmuda Khanum in her concluding remarks said that as a
disaster prone country, Bangladesh needs to create a great deal
of public awareness on appropriate housing on rural areas. Since
natural hazards cannot be averted, we need to know how to live
with hazards by constructing appropriate houses to withstand
hazards but affordable to common people. She thanks the seminar
leader for his excellent presentation on the seminar topic.
It may be relevant to mention that IUBAT and University of
Exeter has an on-going academic co-operation since 1996. The
well-attended program was conducted by BSME student Md Naim

SEMINAR ON Strategic Dimensions of
Organizations’ Improvement: Balanced Scorecard Model |
|
Center for Management Development (CMD) of International
University of Business Agriculture and Technology (IUBAT)
has organized a seminar on “Strategic Dimensions of
Organizations’ Improvement: Balanced Scorecard Model (BSC)”
on Wednesday December 17, 2003 in the seminar hall of IUBAT.
Dr Monir Zaman, Faculty of Business and Law of the Central
Queensland University, Australia and Visiting Professor to

presentation on the current practices of BSC and the
emerging challenges for successful implementation of the BSC
concept.
Dr Zaman presented the current state of corporate
Australia’s balanced scorecard practices, and plans to
implement it in the near future. An investigation of the top
50 Australian companies reveals that only 33 percent have
implemented BSC; however 25 percent of companies are
planning to implement it in the future. The results indicate
that Australian managers have not yet taken a holistic
approach to BSC implementation, but the results also show
that Australian companies are likely to adopt a strategic
posture of intention to implement BSC in the near future.
Corporate managers strongly believe that BSC is a valuable,
strategic, performance measurement system and implementation
will result from stakeholders’ demands.
He also recommended for further research on the key
performance indicators like financial, customers, learning
and growth, and internal process of BSC for successful BSC
strategy in Bangladesh.
A good deal of discussion followed the topical presentation
on the very important and relatively new concept of BSC.

WorkShop on SELECTION DECISION FOR EXECUTIVES |
Effective management of Human Resources is considered to be a
critical role in managing successful organizations. A sound HR
practice is a source of sustainable competitive advantage for
the organization. Organizations succeed by effectively and
efficiently combining resources to implement their strategy. How
well an organization obtains, maintains, and retains its human
resources determines its level of success.
The HUMAN RESOURCE department helps people and organizations
reach their goals. But human resources development faces many
challenges along the way. These challenges arise from the
demands of employees, the organization, and their environment.
Current domestic and international environments are particularly
turbulent because of the growing diversity of the work force and
the globalization of business. Within this climate, the human
resource department must contribute to the organization’s
operating success in ways that are ethically and socially
responsible.
Although the selection process plays the most critical role in
value adding and innovative HR practices, it is not always easy
in the absence of a sound understanding of the changing role of
HR function in the present environment. To develop a sound
understanding of decision for selection of executives and
designing and implementing value adding HR interventions in
their organizations, the Center for Management Development (CMD)
of IUBAT has organized this Workshop on Selection Decision for
Executives.
This workshop is a continuing effort of the Centre for
Management Development (CMD) to expose the participants to
current practices and research in the HRM domain, in addition to
reinforcing their existing knowledge.
This program is a continuation of past efforts, but this time it
is being organized with the active support and participation of
IUBAT’s overseas educational partners.

IUBAT SEMINAR ON RURAL
HOUSING AND HAZARDS |
|
A seminar on “Rural Housing and hazards”
was held at International University of Business Agriculture
and Technology (IUBAT) on February 03, 2003. The seminar was
led by Dr Robert Hodgson, Research Fellow, University of
Exeter, UK and Visiting Professor to South Asian Disaster
Management Center (SADMC), IUBAT. Dr Robert Hodgson made an
orderly presentation on the effectiveness of constructing
houses using indigenous resources to protect village community
from hazards.
While reflecting on research conducted in Dinajpur, Manikganj,
and Gopalganj, Dr Hodgson indicated that 85% of Bangladesh’s
population live in non-engineered homes built of natural
materials such as local mud and timber or bamboo. These
structures are often damaged or destroyed by flooding or
strong winds. He urged to improve technologies and identify
appropriate methods and communicating the same in a
low-literacy environment. The paper presented by Dr Hodgson
illustrates the economic context in which appropriate
improvements can be made and the processes currently underway
that will introduce cement-stabilized mud to mitigate flood
damage to rural homes in Bangladesh. He invited private and
commercial sectors to disseminate the relative advantages of
improved natural materials and “modern” materials such as
concrete.
A lively discussion followed the presentation of Dr Hodgson.
IUBAT VC Prof Dr M Alimullah Miyan in his concluding remarks
said that as a disaster prone country, Bangladesh needs to
create a great deal of public awareness on appropriate housing
on rural areas. Since natural hazards cannot be averted, we
need to know how to live with hazards by constructing
appropriate houses to withstand hazards but affordable to
common people. Living with hazards calls for preparation from
the early childhood so that the education and socialization
process can condition individuals to be conscious of hazards
and be aware of mitigation measures including proper housing.
In replying to a question Dr Miyan mentioned that South Asian
Disaster Management Center (SADMC) of IUBAT has been an ardent
and long time advocate of inclusion of disaster management
concepts among the primary school children and at higher
levels of education.
It may be relevant to mention that IUBAT and University of
Exeter has an on-going academic co-operation. The
well-attended program was conducted by BBA student Karishma
Nusrat under supervision of Business Program Coordinator Mr
Mitul Mahmud Khan and concluded over refreshment at IUBAT
panoramic cafeteria.
