The College of Nursing of IUBAT offers a program leading to the degree of Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). The program seeks to prepare a student for career as a professional nurse, working as an independent service provider or employed in public or private sector within Bangladesh, in regional countries or overseas. There is a good demand for graduate nurses within the country and abroad and the BSNs can easily fit into the local and international job market.
The program consists of coursework in communication skills, the social, biological and physical science supportive to nursing, and professional nursing. Graduates of this program in nursing qualifies to receive registration of Bangladesh Nursing Council. Besides, the graduates are eligible to write the National Council Licensure Examination of USA to become registered nurses. The graduates are prepared to practice in both hospital and non-hospital settings and also have the foundation for advanced study in nursing.
The curriculum provides opportunity for earning a Associate degree/Diploma in nursing after 2 years of course work and appropriate practicum and receive registration with the Bangladesh Nursing Council for practice or employment as a nurse. It is also possible to transfer to IUBAT collaborating institutions in North America and Europe for completing the remaining degree requirements. Students can also write the examination of different licensure bodies abroad to qualify as registered nurses in different country environments.
Students in the nursing program, in addition to meeting educational requirements for entry, must be in good health and manner. A pre-entrance health examination alongwith required laboratory tests and immunizations is required for entrance into the nursing program. The completion of this requirement is the responsibility of the student and the expenses are also borne by the student.
In order to participate in clinical courses, all students will be required to have a name pin, white uniform, white nursing shoes, bandage scissors, a watch, a stethoscope, and pen light. Other detailed equipment and uniform information will be available during the course.
The nursing students are also required to budget extra fund for nursing courses which require experience outside the university. IUBAT has arrangement for clinical experience of students with the Gonoshaystha Kendra (GK) at its Nayarhat (rural) and Dhaka (urban) hospitals. Besides, arrangements are being made with other hospitals operated by voluntary agencies, private organizations and public agencies for clinical course experience and practicum. For out of campus nursing courses and practical, the student will need to provide transportation.
The medium of instruction at IUBAT is English. Since, IUBAT places great emphasis on achieving a high level of competence in both written and oral English, the program includes a series of courses on use of the English language.
PROGRAM OF STUDYThe program of study leading to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) has been designed to prepare women and men as professional nurses. The program focuses on study of individual and family life process from conception through aging, in varying stages of health within the context of community. In the program, students utilize critical thinking and a scientific approach to maximising health for individuals, families and community.
Nursing courses begin early in the student's program of studies and are taken concurrently with general education courses. The nursing curricula builds upon courses in the humanities, and the natural as well as social sciences. Emphasis is placed on the development of the student as an integrated professional person. The basic program is four academic years in length, but the same can be shortened or lengthened by the student through full time/par time study, full/part course load, registration in all 3 semesters in an academic year, etc.
Clinical laboratory is coordinated with the theoretical content in nursing and is planned to meet specific course objectives. Clinical laboratory takes place in a variety of facilities like hospitals, clinics, public health agencies, schools, community organizations, physician's offices, dormatories, and private homes. Learning experiences are selected to reflect the health needs of individuals, families, groups and communities. Several community resources may be used in any given course in a semester to meet course objectives.
Graduates of the program are prepared to function as a generalist in nursing profession. Nurses are oriented to assume professional responsibility for health promotion, for care of people in acute and chronic illness, and for provision of supportive and restorative measures in health care. Graduates of the baccalurate and associate degree/diploma program are eligible for registration with the Bangladesh Nursing Council and for examination for licensure as registered nurses (USA national test NCLEX-RN), and achieve the foundation for graduate study in nursing.

CN places great emphasis on the value of practical work experience in all professional degree programs. Besides the hands-on experience gained in laboratories and hospitals, BSN students are required to work as internees in real life organizations. In the fourth year of study, the CN will place BSN students as interns with hospitals, clinics or such health & population related organizations. This internship is an integral component of BSN program, with 9 credit hours weight.
The comprehensive examination is conducted for students who have satisfactorily completed all the courses of the program. The objective of the comprehensive examination is to test the student's capability to comprehend the entire program. It consists of a written test of three hours and an oral examination which is conducted by a board consisting of academics and practitioners. The examination is graded and the students must obtain a passing grade to qualify. The students must take this examination to fulfil the requirements of the program. The examination is a pre-requisite to practicum.
REQUIREMENT FOR GRADUATIONThe BSN degree will be conferred only to the student who has fully complied with the graduation requirements and has applied for it. The requirements are that the student has:
1. completed all the prescribed courses with a minimum of 158 credit
hours.
2. earned at least "C" grades in each of the nursing courses as well
as in English courses.
3. earned at least passing grade (D) in each of the remaining courses.
4. earned a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 2.5.
5. earned at least a passing grade in the comprehensive examination.
6. earned passing grade in the practicum.
7. satisfactory behavior and discipline.
8. library and financial clearance from the college and university.
